What is Kate Winslet Worth?

The answer is 60 million pounds. At least that’s the answer according to the UK Film Council that has started a novel program (an “audit”) to evaluate the value of creative people for their country. The first data point in the analysis was Kate Winslet and the process is now being referred to as the Winslet algorithm.

What the film council is trying to do is to put a value on her celebrity for the country. David Steele the head of research for the film council is overseeing the effort. He contends that when a person reaches a certain level of prominence, benefits flow to the country of origin through various means such as television appearances, tourism and entertainment sales.

The formula apparently includes a “production investment effect”, “box-office chain effect” and a “general promotional effect”. I haven’t seen any of the details of the calculations published so it is hard to say what all factors were included and how they were weighted and combined. Apparently there are plans to estimate the value of other British celebrities and that should provide some interesting comparative numbers. Hopefully more information will also be released about how the calculations are made.

I would love to know the value of Harry Potter.
